Λιόπετρο

In the area of Hamezio in Sitia also belongs the fortress of Liopetro (Leon di Pietra) which was probably built in the first years of the Venetian conquest. In 1579 the Forecaster Jacopo Foscarini mentions in his report to the Senate that after the destruction of the fortifications of the city of Sitia by the Turkish raids, it would be appropriate for the inhabitants of Sitia to be transferred to Liopetro which could accommodate 6000 people. The strange thing is that even from this report it seems that the fortress was abandoned and almost in ruins.

General Del Monte, in 1579, Capitano Pietro Zane, in 1590, and Governor Scotti, in 1595, returned to the same subject without success, probably because of the great expense required for repairs. Today one sees remains of its mighty wall and towers and a veritable maze of vaulted tanks and other buildings inside. Needs maintenance and restoration.

The view from there is truly amazing. The church of Agios Ioannou has also been built inside. The fortress was built on the site of an ancient acropolis.
