The area of Sitia has until now preserved unchanged the basic elements of its cultural and natural environment. The easternmost tip of Crete, having in addition intact all these special features of the mountainous and coastal environment on which the tourism development of Crete was based, at the same time preserves its ancient traditions and culture.

All these elements are harmoniously combined through a holistic plan for the utilization and preservation of the natural and cultural environment and sustainable local development which goes by the name of Sitia Geopark.

The geopark occupies an area of 517 sq.m. and its boundaries start from the area of Mesa Mouliani and reach as far as Kavo Sidero and from Krya to Xerokampos. The beautiful coastal landscapes alternate with the picturesque and wild elements of the relief of the mountainous zone and with the timeless works of the people of Sitia.

The Sitia Geopark has created with the support of European programs a series of information, information and hospitality infrastructures for its visitors.

Among the other tourism-supporting infrastructures available in the area, the visitor can today browse a network of 20 hiking and other geo-routes, stay and enjoy the richness of the caves at the Speleological Center of Karydi, visit the local Museum of Physics of History in Upper Zakros and to admire the rare geology of the area.

The Geopark is characterized by a wide variety of elements of the abiotic and biotic environment and constitutes a unique geotourism destination.
