Canyons
At every step, the visitor will feel the presence of this geological wealth, which especially in spring and summer enriches the atmosphere with wonderful aromas, given that the canyons of the area are considered – since Minoan antiquity already – the paradise of aromatic and medicinal plants.
Along with the diversity of their flora, the wild fauna they host is also rich. Important communities of rare species of the animal kingdom, such as vultures and hawks, are found on their steep slopes. The relationship of the people of Sitia with the canyons has been sacred since ancient times. This relationship found its most genuine expression in the deification of nature itself and in the close connection of the Cretan gods with their fertilizing powers.
The Gorge of the Dead in Zakros is a place that carries very strongly these ancient roots and the bonds of people with nature. Getting to know the gorges of the area is at the same time a journey to get to know the nature, culture and history of Sitia. The physical context of this acquaintance is constantly changing.
The landscape changes from rich in vegetation, to rough, wild and bare. In the spring, the verdant slopes flood you with aromas and make you feel with all your senses the pervasive joy of Cretan nature.
