Agios Georgios is located at a distance of 14 kilometers from Sitia on the Sitia – Ierapetra road. Those who are interested in caves should not miss to visit the “Mikro Katofygi” cave NW of the village at an altitude of 425 m in the area of Mantiliou Plai. It was a place of ancient habitation and Minoan shells from the Pre-Minoan era and bones of humans and mammals were found in it.

The cave consists of a small room and then a downhill gallery of about 40m length. with rich decoration and basins of water. A short distance from this is the “Great Refuge” which opens into Jurassic limestone. One enters through a 3.20m wide entrance. and consists of two rooms, the first of which is 24m long. and 12m wide. and the second 42m. length and 11 m. width.

The second chamber has four chambers, in one there is a large pool of water.
