Hellenistic settlement of Tripitos
The location of the Hellenistic Sitia as revealed by the latest excavations was probably in the area of Trypitos. This is the name of the small peninsula at a distance of 3 km. east of Sitia.
Probably, it owes its name to a simple elongated trench on the rocky SE side of the 30m long, 5.50m wide. and 5m high. with a floor that slopes towards the sea. According to the archaeologists, this is a neosoic area, i.e. a place where ships were hoisted, protected and repaired (like today’s carnagio). It is the only one attested in Crete and dates back to the Hellenistic period.
In the same area, in recent excavations, a Hellenistic city with parts of its districts and a strong defensive wall on the south side came to light. A lot of pottery, coins, jewelry and lead scales were found.
